LouLou Ghelichkhani Her fans say that LouLou has one of the coolest wardrobes on stage, stocked as it is with exotic platform shoes, throwback vintage gowns, and marvelously designed jewelry.
With its hip, upbeat lyrics and rhythm, this song recalls the style of contemporary French group Christine and the Queens. A remake of an earlier TC track, this version benefits from violin and a variety of symphonic and electronic touches. Take a journey into the inner sacred place of joy and surrender.
That said, some of Thievery Corp's early original music - represented on three of the four albums listed above - is impressive regardless of the cocktail bar associations and image of cultivated cool. The mostly instrumental arrangements are lean and that's one of the album's great strengths: the relatively bare beats and basslines make for quietly powerful groove music. The stoned hip hop numbers "One", "Transcendence" and "Incident At Gate 7" achieve a spine tingling ambience with a very restrained use of their respective elements - strings, subtle synths, flute, tamboura, wisps of indistinct vocal.
The few "songs" are Jamaican vocals and toasting with a conscience, setting the scene for the vaguely revolutionary fervor that permeates most of Thievery's album releases to date. The Mirror Conspiracy is the duo's second collection of original songs and instrumentals, and is where their polished studio craft really starts to emerge.
There's a fuller sound, more dominant Latin poly-rhythms and more live instrumentation. The special way in which Gaza and Hilton integrate little ideas from sources as diverse as orchestral soundtracks, cool jazz and Indian folk songs makes for many striking and beautiful moments here, a method much imitated since by other nu jazz and lounge acts since.
The album also marks the debut of regular guest vocalist Lou Lou - whatever her lyrical intentions are, it's not the words but the the soft, sexy, melodious sound of her voice that stays with you. It's the work of a mature duo more interested in refinement rather than innovation and it's a gorgeously slow-burning collection of down-to-midtempo grooves and luminous sounds. Their second proper album, The Mirror Conspiracy , followed one year later.
The release featured a greater emphasis on live instrumentation and vocals than their debut, with guest singers including Pam Bricker and Bebel Gilberto. The duo's growing fame made them a natural choice to select tracks for the Verve compilation Sounds from the Verve Hi-Fi , which contained vintage Latin jazz and bossa nova cuts from the '60s and '70s.
They returned to their own work in with The Richest Man in Babylon , their first album to inject a message of protest into their music, which featured guest vocalists such as Emiliana Torrini and Shinehead. That same year, the track "Lebanese Blonde" was featured in the highly successful Garden State soundtrack, which later won a Grammy Award. Released in , the darker, more psychedelic full-length The Cosmic Game featured guest vocalists Perry Farrell , the Flaming Lips ' Wayne Coyne , and David Byrne , and the remix compilation Versions followed in As election season approached, Thievery Corporation released the politically minded studio effort Radio Retaliation in September Featuring a guest appearance from Mr.
Lif , Culture of Fear arrived in and mixed social commentary with dub tracks. Their release, Saudade , turned their music in a different direction, being a bossa nova-based effort with guest vocalists like LouLou Ghelichkhani , Karina Zeviani , and Elin Melgarejo. The following year, more tracks from their Jamaican sessions emerged -- these were collated alongside various remixes for their companion album, Treasures from the Temple.
They helped to re-launch the performance area at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in , accompanied by up-and-coming classical musicians.
