Seeing Ash unconscious, Charizard's eyes gleam white and its tail flame grows to enormous proportion. To Ash's surprise, Charizard has learned Dragon Rage ; the attack destroys Team Rocket's machine and sends them blasting off once again. Tad sends out Poliwrath and makes the first move, Water Gun. Charizard's Ember attack is reduced to steam by Poliwrath's twirling Water Gun. Ash replies with Take Down. Poliwrath goes in for a Mega Kick , but Charizard catches its opponent's foot.
Charizard flies into the air and avoids a close-range Ice Beam. Poliwrath attempts a Body Slam , but Charizard swoops in and sends it into the air. Charizard grabs hold of its opponent and performs Seismic Toss , taking Tad by surprise. Poliwrath is knocked out after it hits the ground. Tad rushes over to Ash, and the two Trainers exchange a handshake. The group waves goodbye to Tad as he leaves the island on his ship.
Ash jumps into the air, claiming that nobody will be able to beat him, but he accidentally knocks Charizard off balance while it is scratching itself with its leg. It lands straight into the mouth of Team Rockets newest toy, a giant mechanical mole. The motto is said, again, and is followed by evil cackling as Pikachu tries to escape from their shockproof box.
They begin to drill underground and Charizard makes indications for Ash to jump on his back. Ash jumps on and they continue down the hole that Team rocket dug. After appearing on the other side Team Rocket are pretty confident that they can't be stopped until they are caught by an angered Charizard. It breaks the drill, freeing Pikachu. Meowth, however, has a back-up plan. Pushing a red button releases two buzz saws that attack Charizard. As it jumps around trying to dodge them, Ash is knocked to the ground.
Charizard is furious that Team Rocket hurt the master that he has learned to respect and uses Rage. A ball of intense flame hurtles towards Team Rocket causing them to "blast off" into the distance. Seeing that Ash can finally control Charizard Tad, who has arrived on the scene by now, reiterates his invitation to a rematch. The theme music begins to play as he sends out Poliwrath. Charizard has fond memories of the last match and accordingly lets out a roar of anger.
Poliwrath starts of with Water Gun but Charizard, as commanded by Ash, flies into the air and releases an Ember. Ash attempts to follow Team Rocket through the hole their machine drills and Charizard swoops in front of him, allowing Ash to leap onto his back and ride him into the tunnel behind Team Rocket.
Team Rocket celebrate victory- a little too soon, as usual. As they re-emerge, Charizard stops their drilling machine dead then attempts to use a Flamethrower but Ash advises against it in case Pikachu is hurt. Ash asks if Charizard can break the drill bit and Charizard obliges, kicking the drill to pieces and rescuing Pikachu, smashing open the shockproof box with his mighty jaw. Meowth activates a trap, with a pair of circular saws swinging at Charizard, Ash and Pikachu.
Ash and Pikachu stumble back and get knocked out. Charizard sees this and stares long and hard at the sight. Charizard becomes so incandescent with fury, his tail flame almost dwarves him. Ash and Pikachu come to and see this and Ash consults Dexter- Charizard is using Rage, one of its most powerful attacks. Charizard roars in jubilation and Ash and Pikachu cheer.
Misty, Tad and Tracey arrive to congratulate Ash on finally getting Charizard on his side. Tad offers Ash the rematch he promised and Ash accepts. Charizard and Poliwrath face one another in battle. Misty and Tracey are thrilled to see Charizard finally listen to Ash.
Charizard swoops down towards Poliwrath. Poliwrath prepares to use a Body Slam but Ash has Charizard spin at the last moment, sending Poliwrath off balance. Charizard doubles back and grabs Poliwrath, with Ash telling Charizard to finish things off with a Seismic Toss! Misty and Tracey congratulate Ash and Charizard and Tad does the same, stating he looks forward to battling Ash again. Ash is jubilant and punches the air with joy.
Misty warns Ash not to make Charizard mad but Ash happily claims he can take the heat. As one of the most important episode of Season Two, this is also one of the most memorable. As a side note, while Tracey is talking about type match-ups, the background depicts a clash between fire, ice and electricity- another piece of foreshadowing for upcoming events. Charizard stood up and shows the heroes the flame on its tail - bright as it should be.
Suddenly, the earth shakes. Tad sees there is trouble. Pikachu falls in Team Rocket's trap, who gets imprisoned in an electric-proof room. Team Rocket dig in, so Ash runs to get them. Charizard accompanies him and they go in the tunnel. Team Rocket are happy their plan works, but get stopped by Charizard. Charizard goes to use Flamethrower, but Ash warns him he'll burn Pikachu. Instead, Charizard kicks the drill and gets Pikachu out. Team Rocket use the buzzsaw and while Charizard dodges, Ash and Pikachu fall down, unconscious.
Charizard sees them unconscious and gets enraged. Ash and Pikachu wake up and see Charizard becoming stronger. Charizard uses Rage and blasts Team Rocket off. Tad, Misty and Tracey arrive and see what happened, pleased Charizard is on Ash's side. Ash believes that he and Charizard will be a real team. Tad congratulates them and offers a rematch. Ash and Charizard accept, with Tad sending Poliwrath. Poliwrath uses Water Gun, but Charizard flies off.
Tad sees that Charizard listens to Ash, but it won't be enough to defeat Poliwrath. Ash responds they'll see about that, as Charizard uses Ember.
Poliwrath spins and uses Water Gun, extinguishing fire. Charizard goes to take down Poliwrath. Poliwrath uses Mega Kick, but Charizard stops it. Poliwrath uses Ice Beam and misses, as Charizard flies off. Poliwrath goes to use Body Slam, but Charizard spins to distract it, then gets it and uses Seismic Toss, defeating Poliwrath in an instant. Ash thanks Charizard and hugs it. Tad congratulates Ash and hopes they'll battle in the Orange League.
